FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Next generation, ultra-low emitting resins from Hexion Specialty Chemicals help hardwood plywood manufacturers comply with CARB Phase II, LEED requirements

HANOVER – (May 18, 2009) – Hexion Specialty Chemicals, Inc., today announced the launch of four new products in its EcoBind™ resin technology family designed to reduce emissions from hardwood plywood well below the most stringent global standards. Two categories of products are available - ultra-low emitting formaldehyde (ULEF) amino resins and no-added formaldehyde (NAF) resins – to meet varying customer requirements. These resin systems will allow mills to meet CARB Phase II emission ceilings and/or LEED standards and, in some cases, exempt them from CARB testing.

“These new products rewrite what the industry thought was possible just a few years ago,” says Dale Plante, president of Hexion’s Forest Products Division. “With our EcoBind technologies, hardwood plywood producers can now reach emission levels 98 percent below those in 1980 and comparable to natural wood, while meeting performance requirements.”

ULEF 600-05 and ULEF 600-04 are amino resins which have already been proven, in customer trials, to drive emissions as low as 0.008 parts per million (ppm) in flooring and 0.024 ppm in hardwood plywood. These levels are well below the emission ceilings set by CARB Phase II. Based on initial results, ULEF 600-04 will also allow some hardwood plywood mills to qualify for the CARB testing exemption.

Hexion is also adding two EcoBind-branded NAF products, WL-100 and SBA-800, to its offering for hardwood plywood manufacturers. They combine the natural adhesive power of soy protein with a patented cross-linking technology to deliver small chamber emission test results in the range of solid wood. As they contain no-added urea formaldehyde, they are LEED compliant.

Plus, fully 50% of the materials used in these NAF resins are from sustainable sources.

“These resins may actually sequester the naturally occurring formaldehyde in wood, allowing for the lowest emission test results we’ve ever seen,” says Carlos Nuila, vice president of technology for Hexion’s Forest Products Division.
