Innovative resin systems approach from Hexion Specialty Chemicals helps particleboard and fiberboard producers comply with CARB Phase II and other strict global emission requirements

HANOVER – (May 18, 2009) – Particleboard and fiberboard producers looking to comply with CARB Phase II, ˝ E1 and F**** requirements with little or no capital investment and minimal impact on product shelf life now have a solution thanks to a new systems approach pioneered by Hexion Specialty Chemicals.

The two-part resin systems, marketed under the EcoBind™ brand, combine an ultra-low-mole-ratio base amino formaldehyde resin with either: 1) a scavenger resin designed to work hand-in-hand with the base resin, or 2) a patented coreactant system that ties up free formaldehyde in the polymer to reduce available emittable content. Both systems have been validated in customer trials and are commercially available to panel producers looking for ultra-low emission levels. Panel producers interested in these advanced systems should reference product numbers Z250 (resin), PET220 (scavenger resin), and XL-2000 (coreactant system).

“The industry has been experimenting with various systems to meet the most restrictive global emission regulations for some time,” says Dale Plante, president of Hexion’s Forest Product Division. “The problem has been the trade-offs necessary in performance, storage stability and new equipment investment. These new EcoBind technologies solve those challenges.”

The two-part EcoBind resins can be used with existing mill equipment, have excellent shelf life, and provide physical properties comparable to traditional binder solutions.
